If you’re unsure of which battery you should buy - here is an overview of the different types of batteries in the industry and their pros and cons.

NiCD/NiCAD Batteries: A nickel-cadmium battery is a rechargeable battery with a long shelf life and ability to perform under rigorous working conditions. However, it tends to have a lower energy density with less terminal voltage and less ampere per hour capacity - meaning battery capacity ranges from 1.2Ah - 2.2Ah. Even so, since NiCD batteries tolerate deep discharges over long periods of time - they can withstand more charge and discharge cycles than other batteries. Due to this, in terms of cycle life of a NiCD battery - it can last from 1,000-1,500 charge cycles. NiCD batteries are also very temperature tolerant, easily withstanding high(60°C) and low(-40°C) temperatures. NiCD batteries are also quick charging, normally only taking an hour to fully charge. However, even with all its benefits, these batteries contain toxic metals and can be harmful to the environment - so use and dispose of responsibly.

NiMH Batteries: A nickel-metal hydride battery is a rechargeable battery with a 30-40% higher energy density than a NiCD battery- meaning battery capacity ranges from 2.2Ah - 3.0Ah. However, performance can be negatively impacted by temperatures, rigorous conditions, its high self-discharge rate and repeated deep cycles. Due to this, in terms of life cycle of a NiMH battery - it can last 300 - 500 cycles. It is suggested that users use shallow rather than deep discharge cycles and store in a cool place to extend service life. Regarding charge time, NiMH batteries can take 2 to 4 hours to charge fully. On the plus side, these batteries are environmentally friendly, containing only mild toxins - so recycle responsibly.

Li-Ion Batteries: A Lithium-Ion battery is the most economical rechargeable battery in terms of cost to energy ratio. Lithium-Ion batteries have a high energy density meaning they can have a battery capacity of more than 3.0Ah. Since their self-discharge is lower than both NiCD and NiMH batteries, they don't require regular battery maintenance. In terms of life cycle, Lithium-Ion batteries can last 500 - 1000 cycles. Similar to a NiMH battery, Lithium-ion batteries can take 2 to 4 hours to charge. However, these batteries are fragile and require circuit protection to limit voltage and current in order to keep it safe to use. These batteries are very temperature sensitive with operating temperatures being between -20 and 60°C. Besides the Lithium-Ion, there are a few different types of lithium batteries including lithium polymer, lithium cobalt oxide, lithium manganese oxide, lithium iron phosphate, and lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide. In our opinion, a lithium-ion battery is the best battery to buy for cordless power tools.
